Sientra Cohesive Gel Breast Implants
Although previously unavailable in the United States, except in clinical trials, the Sientra Cohesive Gel Breast Implants, sometimes referred to as “gummy bear” implants, have now been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dr. Daniel C. Mills has had a great deal of experience working with these innovative new implants. The Sientra implants offer a distinctive advantage as compared to silicone implants of the past – the thick, cohesive gel inside of the shell is able to hold its shape. This typically results in an extraordinarily natural look and feel to the patient’s breasts after breast augmentation or breast revision surgery. The structure of the gel also helps to reduce complications that can occur in the unlikely event that the implant ruptures.
Additionally, Sientra breast implants are only available to board-certified plastic surgeons. This is important because other implant companies will sell their implants to non-plastic surgeons. According to Sientra, the warranty on their breast implants is voided if not placed by a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Sientra Cohesive Gel Implant Benefits
Sientra breast implants are designed to provide the most natural-looking breast augmentation results possible. Offered in various shapes, sizes and textures, Sientra implants can provide you with a breast enhancement that complements your unique body contour. The implants are also much less likely to deflate or ripple as compared to saline implants. Depending on your personal aesthetic goals, Dr. Mills will work with you to find the implant that is able to best meet your needs.
For added volume in the upper breast area, round implants may be recommended. This shape is also often suggested for patients who have had a previous implant that increased the size of the breast pocket, making it difficult to place a shaped implant safely.
Dr. Mills might recommend a shaped implant for the most natural-looking results possible. The unique teardrop shape of these implants typically allow them to achieve a very natural blend with your chest. These implants come with three base shapes, as well. Each shape has its own benefits, so the shape you choose will depend on the outcome you want to achieve and your unique needs. The base can be either round, oval, or the Sientra classic base.
All Sientra implants can have either a textured or a smooth shell, regardless of shape or size. The textured shell is generally preferred for shaped implants, because it helps to prevent the implant from flipping and causing an unattractive or deformed look to the breast. The textured shell is also believed to reduce the risk of capsular contracture, especially when used on top of the muscle, although this belief has yet to be proven conclusively if placed under the muscle. (Capsular contracture is a complication that can occur with breast implants, resulting in hardening of the tissue surrounding the implant.) Round implants commonly come with a smooth shell, because they are able to move freely in the breast pocket without causing any physical change in appearance.
Sientra cohesive gel breast implants are significant advances in the field of breast augmentation, and we are happy to offer them to our patients in Orange County.
Selecting the Right Implant for One’s Needs
In order to make sure he understands the exact look his patients’ desire, Dr. Mills spends an ample amount time with each patient prior to surgery. He is well known for achieving results that look very natural, which he envisions as having less rounding at the top of the breast and more volume below the nipple line. For patients interested in this look, a smooth wall, lower profile implant can often be the best option. However, as breast augmentation procedures have gained popularity, some women prefer a rounded look on top of the breast and have no problem with others being able to identify that they have implants.
Taking all this into consideration, Dr. Mills will review every patient’s unique goals and help them select the type and style of breast implant that will most effectively fit their needs.
